Fresh off the LRG train, Raekwon and Nas team up for the video to “Rich and Black,” which 1. looks like it was a lot of fun to shoot and 2. proves that Nas is really sounding hungry right now. The newest single from the criminally slept on Shaolin vs. Wu Tang project, it gives you just a taste of how amazing this album really is.
Now I need to know why this isnt playing on MTVJams. Hrrrrm.

The Cool Kids drop some newness to support "When Fish Ride Bicycles;" Dropping July 12th. Links:
The Cool Kids are back promoting their July 12 release, When Fish Ride Bicycles. Mikey Rocks and Chuck Inglish look to come together on an 11 track, playground four square battle, chock-full of cherry bombs and Pharrell beats. For now the duo swirly the N.E.R.D.’s production, “Summer Jam”, featuring Star Trak soul-singer Maxine Ashley. It follows the summer track formula: catchy drum pattern, stabbing guitar and smooth e-piano. It’s a glass of icy lemonade at 100 degrees outside with Neptunes flavor. “Gas Station”, has a Southern a la Outkast, Killer Mike, and Dungeon Family feeling. The track helps itself by adding UGK’s Bun B to the mix. Both songs are easy listening, cool kid, summer anthems. Stay chill in the heat by listening to these tracks. [via]

Jean Grae, one of the illest females to ever do it and not receive any credit for it, finally refocuses on her music and releases a fairly decent mixtape for us all to enjoy. I havent even listened to it all the way through yet and “Cookies or Comas” is already pretty certifiable at this point. But then again, its Jean Grae.

While we’re pointing out Twitter announcements, dont know if I’m allowed to point this one out but considering Von Pea announced it a few days ago and I’ve just been running behind on getting to all the musicawesomes in my life… I might as well point out more new music coming from Tanya Morgan, my favorite boys.
Now when a musician says September, that usually means a month or two after that. Regardless, after that “Without Hands” track they just dropped, I’m just happy to know that theres more good music on the way.

Holly Miranda and Rachael Cantu Live at The Bootleg Theatre – 7.6.11. Link:
If I haven’t previously spoken on the amazingness that is Rachael Cantu in all her glory… forgive me. But she’s basically one of the illest female indie acts to come out of Southern California lately. While I’m backed up with multiple concerts to go to, you might want to go check out Rachael with her friend Holly Miranda opening at the Bootleg. Definitely worth the measly $10 ticket. Holly Miranda’s enchanting vocals float through a shiny sea of swirling synth tones and layers of shimmering atmospherics on her latest album, The Magician’s Private Library, which was produced by TV on the Radio’s Dave Sitek. The ethereal soundscapes often evoke the Cocteau Twins, but Miranda puts her own distinct stamp on such engrossing interludes as “Waves” and “Slow Burn Trea-son.” A track like “Joints” comes off like a Pink Floyd reverie, but it’s brightened by Miranda’s airy vocals, thoughtful lyrics and compel-lingly feminine mystique. The O.C. native Rachael Cantu has a more straightforward pop-folk style, but her songs are more intelligent than most waiflike singer-songwriters, and her spare version of Tom Waits’ “San Diego Serenade” is both intimate and haunting.

Since we all know I’m in love with KCRW, we all know that I’m definitely going to take some time to pay attention to the “Also I Like To Rock” festival, which is always good summer times. Starting July 7th and taking over every Thursday in July at Hammer Museum. Headliners include Graffiti6 (I really like those kids, actually), The Soft Pack, Grouplove, and The Henry Clay People. The night kicks off at 7pm with DJ sets by KCRW’s own selectors followed by two band performances, including headliners Graffiti6, The Soft Pack, Grouplove, and The Henry Clay People. The full line up is below.
Admission is on a first come, first served basis AND the museum galleries stay open late so you can take advantage of the tunes and the art appreciation all at once.
