Holly Miranda and Rachael Cantu Live at The Bootleg Theatre – 7.6.11. Link:

leave a comment »

If I haven’t previously spoken on the amazingness that is Rachael Cantu in all her glory… forgive me. But she’s basically one of the illest female indie acts to come out of Southern California lately. While I’m backed up with multiple concerts to go to, you might want to go check out Rachael with her friend Holly Miranda opening at the Bootleg. Definitely worth the measly $10 ticket. Swipe from LA Weekly:

Holly Miranda’s enchanting vocals float through a shiny sea of swirling synth tones and layers of shimmering atmospherics on her latest album, The Magician’s Private Library, which was produced by TV on the Radio’s Dave Sitek. The ethereal soundscapes often evoke the Cocteau Twins, but Miranda puts her own distinct stamp on such engrossing interludes as “Waves” and “Slow Burn Trea-son.” A track like “Joints” comes off like a Pink Floyd reverie, but it’s brightened by Miranda’s airy vocals, thoughtful lyrics and compel-lingly feminine mystique. The O.C. native Rachael Cantu has a more straightforward pop-folk style, but her songs are more intelligent than most waiflike singer-songwriters, and her spare version of Tom Waits’ “San Diego Serenade” is both intimate and haunting.

Check out her Facebook page for more music and info on the show tonight, and go have some fun.

Make Music Pasadena looks like its gonna be FUN, Really.

with one comment

Yeah. Its Free. Im Going.

So this is set up to be awesome. And another reason why I love Pasadena, and whatever city youre living in sucks.
Make Music Festival. All throughout Pasadena from Pasadena Blvd and Colorado down to South Lake and Colorado. Over 20 different bands doing shows at several different spots in Pasadena all throughout the entire day. You basically get to walk around the glory that is Downtown and Old Town Pasadena, shop around a bit, and listen to some great music as you enjoy your day.

Now when its free, you would think that the line up would be lacking a bit…. but its not. With headliners Ra Ra Riot and Best Coast stoping through for the indie win, along with Anthony Valadez and Jason Bentley around for the DJ wins… this will not be a sucky time. Video | Photo: The Roots Live @ The Playboy Jazz Festival.

(Before you do anything… Hit a like button up there for me. Then go leave a comment. Don’t let me have installed Disqus for nothing. lol.)
So remember when I told you about The Roots headlining the Playboy Jazz Festival? Yeah, I made it out. And here is all the awesome proof.

By the way… check out Slidedeck. Its the truth and the future. I know the photos dont fit into the format yet (still working on it), but if you want to see the picture in full, all you have to do is click on it and it will take you to the full photo.
[SlideDeck id=’6885′ width=’100%’ height=’300px’]

Also, an interesting interview with Questlove regarding The Roots leading such a prominent jazz festival. I mean, since The Legendary are basically a Jazz Band that do hip hop, I don’t understand what the problem is. Yeah, some of the 60+ got up and left… but they were like, 60. No offense. (And thanks euroweb for featuring my video.)

But really, the YouTubes should give you an ideal of what a fun time it was. Everything I have is up on my YouTube page for you to see.
The best part? The Gil Scott-Heron Cover of “The Bottle” with Terrance Blanchard on the horns. Wow.
Second to that… the lead in from Bob James and Fourplay doing “Westchester Lady,” which led right to The Roots set. Dopeness.

The Roots and Terrance Blanchard: Gil Scott-Heron’s “The Bottle”

….The start of the show… Bob James and Fourplay do “Westchester Lady” before The Roots tear the roof off.

…and here we go.

..and there you go. I didn’t even go to this thing with the intent of recording. I was on my 3rd glass of chardonnay. So its not the greatest stability in the camera. But I hope you semi-enjoy.
Leave a comment in the awesome discuss feature for me, and spread the word.

Is anyone else noticing the Red Hot Chili Peppers popping up all over the Internets? Yeah.

In case you didn’t notice…. It looks like the Red Hot Chilli Peppers are gearing up their Social Media game for their new album release, “I’m With You.” Starting a brand new twitter account a few days ago, then tweeting a picture of the boys at a photo shoot to make things official, the new RCHP Twitter seems like this will be the place to get updates on their newest project and other random awesomeness, like their very first trip to Hong Kong. Thought they woulda did that already.

More importantly… they’ve already listed the Tracklisting for their new album. So you know its serious.

Brothers and sisters! Here are the song titles of our new record ‘I’m With You’ Yeeeeah muthafuckas!

1. Monarchy of Roses
2. Factory of Faith
3. Brendan’s Death Song
4. Ethiopia
5. Annie Wants a Baby
6. Look Around
7. The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie
8. Did I Let You Know
9. Goodbye Hooray
10. Happiness Loves Company
11. Police Station
12. Even You Brutus?
13. Meet Me at the Corner
14. Dance, Dance, Dance

There you have it.

For those who are into the old school way of doing things (lolz), you can check out their main website for more. I’ll be staring at their twitter for now.

The Do-Over + Coachella Afterparty + Adidas Originals Sponsoring = I'm there with my Jeremy Scotts on.

with one comment

If youre in LA, in the 24+ age category and you love Hip Hop, Funk and Soul… then you are probably well aware the epic legacy of The Do-Over. Rocking some of the best Spring and Summer nights of your life, with ever-talented line of DJ’s (Like my emmy-award winning favorite DJ Jedi) rotating in and out to keep it fresh and new.
Now if  you know me, you’ll know that I love Coachella… and the business behind Adidas Originals Fashion line (*turns around; looks at European Jeremy Scotts, smiles inside). So imagine my immediate geekery when finding out that all three of my favorite things are teaming up to throw whats probably going to be a star-studded, party all night, DJ’s saving your life event.

Enough said. Its time for you to check out the flyer, go RSVP, and plan for a good time.

Guitars and Concerts. Blessings and Breaks. More on what that means when you Click Here:

leave a comment »

The first 3....

So what are these Blessings, you ask? I was just offered a wonderful writing position with the KICKASS site, Autostraddle. Wow. Wowwee wowwow. Now, if you’re from the old school, you remember that Autostraddle was one of the first sites to show love and appreciation to me… just at a time where I really needed it. Well ever since then, we’ve been following each others awesomes and plotting out the right time to form like Voltron to give you some of the best fucking music you’ll ever be exposed to. Crystal and the amazing editors at AS have decided that now is that time. *humbled.*

Guitars and Concerts? Well tonight was an amazing night. A fairly normal night for what I do, but still amazing nonetheless. You can’t complain after an evening of wonderful music provided by Zoe Keating and her SuperCello, Kaki King and her 9011 guitars… sitting backstage in the house Jon Brion built. Real Instrument Playing Appreciation Night. Its going down. Not to mention my bestie Matt Melvin making the drive from San Diego to hang out for a while. I was surrounded by win this evening. It was a great feeling. Windy is all over the video, as usual.

Anyways, with that being said… here’s where the Breaks part comes in. When the boss is in town, its time to get to work. There will be traveling involved, so I won’t be on my computer (like THAT) for a minute.  Also; with the new writing gig

...and the other 4. 7 is the magic number.

at Autostraddle… along with kickin it over at the World Famous Potholes… I’m going to have some writing pieces Ima need to focus on. I have to sound like I’m creditable and like I know wtf I’m talking about… so we’ll have to gear all my good vocabulary and vernacular that way for a minute. But I’ll still be here, randomly writing my ass off about whatever, and then not editing the shit, making me look like a total dork.

On top of all that… Its time to start getting serious about finishing the archival for the site and new layout. You guys know ive been wanting to update my baby for a while, but the health of my friend who is doing this site take priority (hey Chris… I love you. Get Better). The less I post, the faster it can get done… so we’ll see how that goes.

I wont be going anywhere. I’ll be around to update you and hopefully post up the new Dee-1 Interview I just finished.  Until then, just go through the archives, because im sure you havent read everything I’ve posted. You do that, and I’ll see you guys in a few days.

That is all.

This is the Official @ZOOLAY Appreciation Post.

with one comment

So The Best of the West combine to make some nice hip hop tracks. After teaming up with The Beatnuts (and maybe Chino XL), ZOOLAY is hard at work creating another nice mixtape for you to review. You go download that, I’ll post up what little videos they have (work on that guys, social media director is YELLING at you) for you to enjoy.

p.s. The boys ARE looking for a Videographer to get their youtube game up a bit. If your down… holler at their twitter account. They’d love to meet up with you.
