There is way too much awesome in this one Photo, and the average person will probably never figure out why.

So. Many moons ago, when Erykah Badu released her 4th album New Amerykah Part 1: 4th world war, she also released a video for “Honey,” one of her better tracks on that (fairly amazing) album. Somewhere in between that wonderful video (which was already filled with great vinyl album shoutouts to great artists), Erykah managed to wedge in a stunning new song that wasn’t included on the album; instantly driving us nerds insane for more. It was also a perfectly executed shout out to the father of her first child, André 3000, and his creative stylings. Using the exact same format as set up as André did in his personal video epic, “Hey Ya,” Erykah channels André in the fullest while singing her own funky joint which we all believed was called “Annie Dont Wear No Panties.”  It was greatness. People were all over YouTube chopping and editing that one specific part of the video out of the entire shoot and presenting that as its own video, at one point (that was awesome, before YouTube nazi’s took it down).

Well, we don’t need to do all that anymore. It looks like Erykah has teamed up with an All-Star Cast and Musical Crew to bring you a full Version of “Annie Dont Wear No Panties….” now dubbed “Don’t Forget the Hot Sauce.” Cleverly hiding behind the name ‘Edith Funker,’ everyone from Nikka Costa to Questlove show up to form this SuperAwesome band, Voltron-Style.

I dont need Rick Ross on the remix. Matter of fact, I don’t need a remix. But Erykah Badu releases another captivating video. Link:

Rawse.

Badu and Rawse (who I’m still undecided on, frankly) team up together for another interesting Video by Ms. Badu. Looks like she’s gone ahead and combined her Window Seat Remix video with what seems to be the intro to her next single, “Cant Turn Me Away (Get Munny).” With Erykah showing off what looks to be her real hair for the first time… ever… and random scenes with people dress in black and catwoman outfits robbing stores… it’s another provocative video, at least.

Spread the word and share.

Alejandra in Mexico made this for me. Since I can't draw a straight line with a ruler, I'm in love. And I feel special.

Not that I’d want to distract you from the glory that is my last.fm (CLICK HEEEERRRRRREEEEEEE), but I’ve gotten a ton of requests asking me to blog up what I’ve been listening to lately. Everyone also wants me to start listing my top albums of 2010. Welp, that’s what I keep a last.fm for. Lord knows I don’t remember. So here you go.

So I found Erykah Badu's (Erica Wright's) Demo Album from 1996. You know I got links.

I got that old school.

So while rummaging and cleaning out the digital music collection, I came across an absolute winner that I was pretty sure I had lost a long time ago. A friend of mine, the same man who helped produce this album, sent me Erykah Badu’s earliest recorded work he had available… back when she was still known as Erica Wright and still trying to be signed to a major. It’s a great compilation of Erica/Erykah’s best vocal efforts at the time, where you can see the direction she was going in even back then with Intros and Outros, Part 1 and Part 2’s…… and dance remixes of her demo songs, just so you get a taste of what her and her producers were into at the time.

Enough typing from me though, just tell me what you think.

Hollerations.

Erykah Badu Album Release Party @ The El Rey: 3.30.2010

This is one of the only photos I could get, since I was partying hard.

Wow. This was an interesting night.
It all started with Erykah sending out a late night tweet (#theysleepwegrind) about having some kind of album release show in Los Angeles within 24 hours. We were instantly at work, and were able to find the show at The El Rey, and secured tickets quickly (even though a lot of us hate ticketmaster. Man, thats its own blog).

I went ahead and bought the album at Amoeba and headed out for the night. No long lines to get in, but we didn’t show up until 10pm. Interestingly enough, our timing was perfect… it turns out that Erykah was out and about in the crowd, chilling and having a good time. Came and stood directly in front of me and a few of my friends. REALLY cool. Didn’t take long for people to ‘fishbowl’ her but she didn’t seem to mind… she just moved from spot to spot all night, and chilled out with her fans. It was pretty impressive.

Meanwhile, Erykah took the opportunity to show her latest visual art project to us  (I’m sure this was the film that was premiered at Damon Dash’s Art Gallery)… which was intriguing, to say the least… Erykah in full frontal in some kind of wonderland… It’s very hard to describe, to say the least. But there was the pretty amazing footage of Erykah on what looks to be the day “Window Seat” was filmed. Nice footage of her on a swing, different outfits on, planning out how she was going to drive and park at the spot… secretly studying the area before doing it to make sure there were no cops… then the actual play of the entire video. That was really interesting to watch as a whole.

From there, it took another hour for the show to pop off (I have to remember that Erykah likes to start late…), but it was definitely worth the wait. Amazing live band that immediately went into Erykah’s new material, she strolled on stage and took her place with ease. She breezed in and out of songs Like “20 Feet Tall,” “Me,” “The Healer,” “Undercover Overlover,”  “Yeyo,” and a kickass version of “On and On” “…and On” that I got on video for you. Yes I’m screaming all over it, get over it.

“On and On…” “…& On”
“The Healer”
Flippin off the haters on  “Outta of my Mind, Just in Time”

She also did an epic version of “Back in the Day (Puff)” where she blatently gave permission “to go ahead, break that green out and light that up.” You suddenly saw an Ozone Layer of smoke fill the El Rey thick as that second layer of Los Angeles smog. Incredibly awesome. She then closed out the show by letting us know that the El Rey was getting ready to kick us out (lol), and then going through each on of her tracks on the album, naming the producers of it and who played what on the song. Really, in all… just a great great night.

Although Erykah can sell out Greek and Gibson Theatres, shes at her best when she caters to and does small, intimate shows like this one. Songs seem to have a sense of being personal and directed to you, just for you in this kind of environment. In all, will go see her again. As long as the prices are reasonable. Its a recession. LoL.

It took 2 days to recover and post about this… but Enjoy.

So now the Erykah Nerds are wondering who Matt & Kim are. Lemme give you a quick tutorial.

Cute.

Sound: Brooklyn Indie Rock Pop.
Albums: Matt and Kim (2006); Grand (2009)

Why?
Shit. If Erykah feels that they are worthy, then you know they are already worth the time.
Matt and Kim are an adorable Indie duo out of Brooklyn, New York, who have been crafting an interesting pop rock sound on the low. While their first album had little sonic gems on it, it wasnt until their second album, “Grand” dropped in 2009, and their lead single “Daylight” got some love via a Bacardi Commercial. From there, De La did an awesome remix of the song… and their popularity grew from there.

But it was their video for their single “Lessons Learned” that caught everyone’s attention. Winning MTV’s award for Breakthrough Video, “Lessons Learned” follows Matt and Kim on a short journey through New York’s Times Square as they strip themselves clean of all clothes and any insecurities, while running from the police.

….and THATS where Erykah Badu found HER inspiration for the “Window Seat” video.

And there you have it. Running nekkid through the streets is the new hot thing right now. LOL.
Meanwhile, check out these other Matt & Kim joints, and Enjoy.
