Did we talk about the Big Boi and Modest Mouse Collaboration? Because its actually happening.

WAOW.

So after hearing the rumor of this odd yet amazing combination happening for a while, and silently waiting for some kind of confirmation… it finally comes through via the wonders of Big Boi’s Twitter and Twitpic. Then Pitchfork came through with the confirmation. Swipe from them, because I really don’t feel like typing all this sh*t out right now:

Last week, OutKast MC Big Boi revealed on his Twitter that he’s been in the studio with Modest Mouse, working on new music. To put things lightly, the news took a whole lot of us by surprise. MTV recently spoke with Big Boi about the collab and filled in a few blanks, though we still have no idea how this collaboration might sound or when we’ll get to hear it. According to the man himself, he’s serving as a producer on Modest Mouse’s new album, as is frequent OutKast collaborator Chris Carmouche. Thus far, Big Boi hasn’t done any rapping for the band. The crew has been working together at Big Boi’s own Atlanta studio, Stankonia. Talking to MTV, Big Boi described the collaboration in terms that only he could use: “I’ve been a fan of the band for a minute… We’re all musicians and producers and artists, and it’s just like a big-ass brainstorm, a brain-stormin’, tsunami, typhoon, tectonic-plates-movin’ kind of thing. We do all types of music, so to get the chance to jam with a jammin’-ass band, I knew it was going to be cool. We had a vibe too. We made a couple of records that are just jamming. It’s a hodgepodge of funkiness.” Modest Mouse has been a highly successful, critically acclaimed band for about a decade and a half now, but this still might be the nicest thing anyone has ever said about them.

I don’t want to overhype things, because when you get really excited for albums, they can sometimes leave you disappointed. But I will say that my brain exploded from reading the music awesomeness that is occurring somewhere out in this universe.

As things develop and music is released…. I will find a way to get it to you.

Stay tuned.

Album and Sample Appreciation Post: Big Boi – Sir Lucious Left foot | The Son of Chico Dusty

Boi, Stop.

Sound: Funk based lyrical Hip Hop ripe with horns and catchy hooks.
Album: Big Boi – Sir Lucious Left foot;  The Son of Chico Dusty (2010)

Why?
Because not only does Big Boi prove that on his own, he is a Hip Hop force to contend with, this is basically as close to an OutKast album as you’re going to get for a while. Filled with heaping servings of traditional home cooked Southern Hip Hop, Big Boi delivers not only decent tracks with guest appearances from T.I. to Janelle Monae to Jamie Foxx, but awesome lyrical content to boot. Who knew a song about shaking your ass would sound so verbally intriguing? I was just talking about Andre 3000’s awesome and his mixtapes… and then Big Boi drops this amazing on us.

You’ve probably already heard “Shutterbugg” but what you need to go listen to is “Tangerine,” “Hustle Blood” and the EPIC “General Patton,” which contains a magnificent sampling of Georg Solti’s “Aida”… Act 2, Scene 2. You can instantly hear the matching ‘Vieni, O Guerriero Vindice’ in Italian when the song goes on.

How I even knew that off the bat, I don’t know. But… yeah. (Nerd)

Pretty awesome what Hip Hop can do.

Go have fun.

Andre 3000 is better than your Favorite Rapper without even trying. Here are the Mixtapes to prove it.

Rappers who smile.

Really, while I respect 90% of the music out there and whatever you’re listening to… I don’t care who your favorite rapper is right now. I don’t care how street Jeezy and Rick Ross keep it. I don’t care about Lil’ Waynes (albeit hilarious) punchlines. If you ever seriously listened to 50 cent, your opinion in hip hop is invalid. I’m still waiting for Kanye to recover from the  major loss of his mother (that boy is not over that shit yet), and I’m not impressed with your emo raps and attempts to channel  The Native Tougues/ATCQ  Movement from the early ’90’s. I want Lyrical Power and Performance. I want that hip hop that you actually have to LISTEN and pay attention to in order to comprehend its meaning. And I stick with that. With all that being said, basically…. your favorite rapper probably can’t compete with Andre 3000. I’m pretty sure of it.

In the game for almost 20 years at this point, 3000 has amassed a collection of legendary songs, verses, solo songs, and guest appearances on everyone songs. He’s got more albums, certified hip hop classics, grammies and talent than anything on mainstream radio. Amazing thing? He really hasn’t done anything in the form of a full song since The Love Below album. While Big Boi was hard at work on his new (and wonderful) album, he’s just been working on a kids TV show,  seen out and about with his son with Erykah Badu, and chillin with Mos Def’s most recent ex-wife (ITS A TRAP). Somehow though, it doesn’t stop him from hopping on other peoples tracks for a few bars and dropping some of the hottest lines with sickest delivery you’ve heard.

You need proof? Here go the mixtapes.

The Verses = All of Andre’s hottest Verses from Early OutKast to Stankonia. They basically dropped off Big Boi off the tracks, and mixed ‘Dre’s verses into a mixtape. And I mean everything.  About 50 songs worth.

Whole Foods = All of Andre’s most recent appearances on other peoples songs only. Basically, someone found anything that Andre 3000 guested on in the last 10 years, and put it all on one mixtape. From his song that he did with Gwen Stephani, to His MONSTER verses on the “Throw Some D’s” remix and UNK’s “Walk It Out.” Its 23 songs of  pretty amazing.

Go ahead and download all of that, and give it a listen. It will hold you over until he decides to get back to rapping fulltime.

And please, enjoy my Archives/RSS Feed of musical nerdery while I go take a break for a few days. I’ll see you guys in a bit.

Janelle Monae wants to teach you how to Tightrope | B-Side: I’m going to be busy for a minute.

leave a comment »

Janelle Monae is back. And bringing dancing with her.
“Tightrope,” the new single and video off her new album “The Archandroid” is filled with some of the funkiest rhythms and horns that I’ve heard since early Outkast albums. No wonder… Big Boi also pops up with an appearance on this track, in which Janelle addresses hatin ass haters, excelling and succeeding regardless, and also puts us on to a cute, fun new dance that I don’t see myself having the coordination to execute anytime soon.

Watch this here:

And tell me that isn’t a nice cut right there.
I gotta hand it to Janelle. Shes got the talent and the sound… and a certain uniqueness that works for her. Hope she can get it to work in her favor.

As for the B-Side…. If you know me, you know I’m kinda busy right now. Theres a lot to do and a lot to get ready for.  And there’s also a lot to write about. There’s the epic win of putting Kaki and Melissa together, Melissa’s awesome movie and an amazing interview on her that I have to link up for you to read, there’s Kaki and Questlove interaction coming up soon; something I’ve been praying for going on 5 years now, Blood Red Shoes and their AMAZING release, Jose James and his awesome Soul/Jazz Release,  Soul Train Line Obsession I have to get out of me, Rachelle Ferrell Live Show Review and News on a new album from her (PRAISE JEBUS), progress (or lack there of) of the VH1Soul/Comcast/NoCal situation,  the format change of MTVJams moving its Jam of the Week start day to Sundays (I’m secretly mad as shit son. How you gonna vote out something that’s been law since MTVJams came into existence?  I should flat-out call Seniority and Nerdery status on you and deny this as a whole) and whatever the hell else comes up. I promise to do all of this while all you awesome, wonderful people who actually read this shit actually still care.

Love to all; God (or whatever you believe in) Is Good.
Pray for Mojo,
