Wonderful time with a great woman and performer, it was.
Picking up the tickets for 1iota and bringing some friends along for the ride, I headed over to Hollywood and Highland for an awesome free concert from Jill Scott. Since it would be my first time seeing her in live format since the “A Long Walk” tour over 7 years ago… I was curious and a bit geeked to see what she would have in store and how she would sound live on these tracks. And as usual, Ms. Scott does not disappoint. Although only given 4 to 5 song set to keep us impressed and entertained, Jill added on two extra songs just for us. Singing “Shame” (you can see that below), So Blessed (a new, NICE track), Golden, Gimme, It’s Love, and A Long Walk… I have to say. Its the best free concert I’ve been to in a while.

Thanks for a great time, Ms. Scott.

Check the video below for more, and enjoy.

Mary Mary consistently make hits in the name of the Lord. I have no negative qualms with this.

I'm walking too!

I love Mary Mary. I have for a while. They are greatness. Shoutout to Yolanda Adams, by the way.
So why cant the sacred mix with the secular and party in the name of the Lord? Imagine all the youth that would find love in the lord as a result of music that was universal to everyone. As long as his name is glorified and respected at all times, I have absolutely negative qualms with this.

Then again, I’m not Christian. So yeah, I understand. But songs like Mary Mary’s “I’m Walking” in all of its inspirational glory in the name of the Lord… is the stuff that makes me wish I was.

Encouraging and uplifting music that reminds you that God is Good.
I think thats awesome.

Since the Rapture is coming, I will prepare (celebrate?) with the appropriate musics.

Mary Mary is always appropriate.

Throw in some Kanye West for good measure:

….and Blondie by default. Shoutout to VH1Soul an’em.

Gotta get some Sam Cooke in…

Mahalia Jackson too.

And its not the Rapture without Anita Baker singing about being caught up in it.

I havent figured out how to center Haiku Player yet, but just tell me if it works for now.

Dear Internets. The D’Angelo Album is REAL. Let me attempt to prove it to you (Part Two):

with 4 comments

Remember when I was telling you the D’Angelo Album is Real? Yeah. More Proof.

If you didn’t believe me, the backtracking, general watching, and the fact that a good friend is actually in the middle of mastering this album… then lets go ahead and get the clear and precise Questlove internet statments on top of all of that.

Coming from my friend Andrew and Gedi over at Prefix and Potholes, they went ahead and pointed out some awesomeness at The Urban Daily and on Facebook that I somehow missed out on… and awesome little quip that basically verifies everything I’ve been saying for the last few months, including the people who are involved in it.  Yay for facebook screenshots. Awesome. Click the links if you want more.

Yeah, I should have posted this up ages ago, but Computer Armageddon folks. Still catching up. Still important to post up and update you on, since, you know. I kinda love this dude regardless.

Please let this be good.

This is the Chapter 8 | "I Just Wanna Be Your Girl" (Anita Baker's First Appearances) Appreciation Post.

Man. You dont know how much I love this song.

When it plays, I’m overwhelmed by the vivid memories of waking up early sunday mornings… that soft yellow morning light breaking through the shades in my room, the sounds and smells of a focused Mom in the kitchen handling pancakes, turkey sausages cooking, the vinyl player already active and alive with Chapter 8 on the stereo speakers. Along with being a certified Soul Music Classic, theres a certain comforting feeling I associate with this song that expands far outside of its lyrical topic (which just happens to be beautiful, by the way).

Soul, Funk and Disco influenced, Chapter 8 was Anita’s first band and foray into the music industry back in 1979. Unfortunately, some moron at Ariola Records (which was their label at the time), dropped the band after one album, citing that the times and music had changed, and that Anita Baker could not sing (slap them). The label eventually folded. Funny though… Anita eventually rebounded with a new label and her first Solo Record, the legendary “Songstress.” I love how she won in the long run. With all the issues behind the Chapter 8 album, it made physical copies of the record, especially in vinyl (we got that though), very hard to find. Until I got incredibly lucky one day at amoeba. Thank you, Music Jebus.

If you’re interested in some classic soul | old school love music… or if you just need some good Sunday Morning Music (trust me), go ahead and listen to Chapter 8 | Anita Baker – I Just Want To Be Your Girl.
Later kids.

Mayer Hawthorne – Impressions: The Cover EP. Links:

Unexpected Win.

Always finding new and impressive ways to up and surprise me, Mayer Hawthorne comes through with his latest project, “Impressions: The Covers” EP. Filled with with wonderful covers of everyones old school favorites, like ‘(I got) Work To Do, ‘Fantasy Girl,’ and ‘You’ve got the Makings of a Lover,’ Mayer is basically establishing his talents and dominance in the awesome niche of Retro Soul, and music overall. And its free. So there’s really no losing involved in any of this right now. Unless you dont download it.

This boy is good, I’m a believer after this little joint. As If I wasnt before.

Anyways, you can download the EP in full by heading here. Break it open on Sunday morning, get your breakfast game on, sit down and listen to this, and enjoy.
