Sample Appreciation Post: Erick Sermon | Music = Marvin Gaye | Turn On Some Music

with 4 comments

Marvin = Epic

Sound: Well Produced, Well Sampled, Boom Bap Hip Hop.
Album: Music (2001)
Sampled From: Marvin Gaye “Turn On Some Music” | “Vocal Sample of  ‘I’ve Got My Music'”

Why?
It’s the hip hop music junkies anthem. He says it within the first verse of the song… “I wish Music could adopt me.” Yep. Just about explains it all.
On a detailed, amazing flip of a Marvin classic, Erick does what he does best… tells you the story of the life of the Music Nerd. Expressing his adoration for the art of hip hop, the elements and history, and the power music has to unite all people of all colors and creeds. Great hip hop music. At this point, this song is almost 10 years old, and still plays like its brand new. I was lucky to be at a listening party for this album years ago… and snag a Promo CD for the album where he goes into detail about the new album, and some of his past hits. The story behind “Music” and how it was made is almost as good as the song itself (click here for the download).

The Sample: Turn On Some Music

This, and the Original Vocal Instrumental of this song were what we’re used to make this awesome win of a song.
I mean, the lyrics within themself is enough reason to keep this song on repeat.
“‘Cos music’s been my therapy
Taking the pain from all my anatomy
Oh and my anatomy
It’s my symphony, always stay with me
You know that the world ain’t right
Baby, lots of people stay uptight
I’ll go crazy
If something ever happened to my musical thrill
And darling your love is just like my music.

Music is the soul of the man
Music makes a happy day
And music makes the clouds go by baby
Your music keeps my tears inside my eyes
Your music makes me want to sing
Girl, music is a joy to bring
Music is my heart and soul
More precious than gold

Happiness today is just a song away…”

Coming with that “I usta love H.E.R.” type of metaphorical writing, Marvin combines his love for the ladies with his obvious obsession with his art… Music. No one does it like this anymore. I wish more people would.

Enjoy, dammit.

Summerjam Alert and Sample Appreciation Post: Joanna Newsom | The Book of Right-On = The Roots | Right On. Praise Musical Jebus.

I wanna play the harp. (Photo Credit Elena Morelli)

I’m not going to say a whole lot on this, because I have intentions on giving this album a full blog, based on the overwhelming amount of awesome that has come from it. But I do want to say this. I’ve talked about Joanna here previously. Shes great. But I never thought I would hear her in such an amazing format, with an amazingly done sample done by The Legendary Roots Crew. And I don’t know how you could flip her voice, being that she’s got one of those special tone, nasally, folksy sounding songs. But they did it.
Harps and Hip Hop. The sh*t needs to happen more often, frankly.

A lot of people are frankly freaking out on who Joanna is and where this sample came from, so this is where I like to step in and help out a bit.

This is where it all starts… The Book of Right On from Joanna’s 2004 Album, “The Milk Eyed Mender.” This is the awesome live version done on Jools Holland.

That must have caught someones attention in the Roots Crew (probably ?uestlove), which let to the awesome flip you have below.

Honestly, one of the best songs on the album. The most upbeat of the songs on the album, and most accessible. Who woulda thought you could make Joanna Newsom accessible. lol.

Please Enjoy. And go buy this album. BUY IT. STOP DOWNLOADING. You seriously need this in your life.

Sample Appreciation Post: Shaun Boothe finally puts Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” to GREAT use with “Poor Boy.” And an Awesome Video To Match.

I'm impressed.

So Bohemian Rhapsody is special to me. One of my first introductions to rock music, it’s a song that sticks dear to my heart, as well as zillions of other people. If you know this song, you know it has an amazing intro, story, lyrical content and epic rock transitions EVAR… and you had a sense that someday soon, someone was going to cover or sample the song for their own personal use. Welp, someone did it. And it actually sounds like he did it right.

Shaun Boothe uses “Poor Boy,” and a great Video Concept to make an intriguing return to hip hop after a brief absence. Taking the piano riff and lyric from the intro part of Bohemian Rhapsody, he loops said piano phrase and lyric perfectly, and uses it as an emphasis on growing up in the hood as a Poor Boy. Adding on interesting drumwork and some pretty decent lyrical content (“I had to be outstanding in order to Stand Out”), it turns out to be a wonderful chop and usage of a great song.

On top of that, he gives you a fun video where if you happen to have 3D glasses…. Shaun gives you his visual definition of a “3D Rapper.”

He’s also already teamed up with Talib Kweli for this interesting cut as well…

Download the links and have fun.

Kaki King Junior

bet you didnt know she could do that.

Hi people. Let me take some time to get you updated on Kaki.
Now I can officially confirm that Kaki is set to be the Musical Guest on Jimmy Fallon. She’ll be on the day after Junior Drops in the States, to promote the new album. Yes. Its set to be pretty #$&*^*@#^!!!! Awesome. Song Performed will probably be “Falling Day,” but it’s not official yet. Once I know, I’ll let you know.

Second… There is no leak on Junior yet. The album has been released in Europe, but remember, they get different songs/tracklisting than us. However, some super nerds got together and took the samples from the Amazon Preview of the album, and put together a nice link on YouTube for Everyone to listen to.

So that’s as close as were coming for a while, unless your buying the import.
BUY THE IMPORT.

Love, Me.

Sample Appreciation Post: Kanye West – I Wonder.

*kanyeshrug*

*Kanye Shrug* LoL. You Douchebag.

Album:  Graduation (2007)
Sound: Old Kanye Hip Hop and Piano Samples. (My favorite combination. Cant Lose.)

Why?
An inspirational song urging its listeners to stay true to themselves and the dreams that keep them alive, it was listening to this at 3am that really made me step back and realize how much I miss Old Kanye. Not to mention that it samples a BEAUTIFUL Labi Siffre record called “My Song,” evenly lacing a bass drum-ridden track with beautiful, simple, yet dream like piano riffs that I HAVE to learn at some point this year. you can always get it Here:

Kanye’s “I Wonder:”

Labi Siffre’s “My Song:”

either one of these should hold your attention and amazement for a while.
enjoy.
